Iguanas
Common Green Iguana (Iguana iguana)
.Update: 12/26/07
Dr. Barten called with blood work results. At present time, it looks like this guy was suffering from poor nutrition and neglect. He will be on antibiotics for 2 weeks. We finally got him eating!
No signs of MBD, kidney, or liver disease so this guy has a shot of making it. Dr. Barten said he had zero body fat and excessive muscle loss from the neglect.
Update: 12/17/07
We just rescued another big iguana. He is a pretty big boy. Unfortunately he is thin and has some toe damage. He needs to go to the vet to be checked out.

Update 12/19/07
We have an appointment on 12/22/07 at Vernon Hills Animal Hospital with Dr. Steve Barten, one of the top reptile vets in the country. Keep fingers crossed that we can get some weight on the male.

Note that we are not looking to intentionally acquire more iguanas. We had an opportunity to recieve a Vision TM  80"L x 44"H enclosure which will allow us to do a better job of heat and humidity retention for our big female, especially during the winter. We had to take the igauna as part of the package. We are going to get this guy some vet attention and we will move forward.

Most pet stores do not understand or properly educate people about how big these guys get and what the proper diet requirements are. As a result, many iguanas that are fortunate enough wind up in some kind of rescue program for either size issues or health problems.

If you want an iguana as a pet, please educate yourself prior to getting one. Note that our mesh enclosure is 6' L x 6' H x 3' D.  This pen will now become our outdoor enclosure so we can take advantage of natural sun light.

If you still want an iguana, please rescue an iguana that needs a new home before going out and purchasing a young baby.

Danny, Anne, and Ben love our animals. They help take care of all of our creatures. With the three kids in the picture, you can get an idea as to how big this enclosure is.
