Description:
Welcome to Conservation Station. Here, Scott will take you on a journey to explore the rainforest, some of its wildlife, and the problems that the rainforests of our world face today.
- It's about inspiring our kids to make a difference
- It's about change
- It's about making positive decisions that effect our planet
- It's about empowering our kids
This program is designed to be supplemental to your current unit on Rainforest Conservation. Scott will engage your students in an active discussion about our rainforests. In our past experience, we have found that this program builds a cohesive link to your classroom program. Students are eager to share what they have learned with us. This builds an additional layer of confidence in your students. This program is based on a program that Scott developed and presented while serving as Curator for Rainforest Cafe, Inc. We will explore the layers of the rainforest and the benefits that the forests offer. We will talk about rainforest destruction and its potential impact on our planet Earth.
We will discuss wildlife conservation and develop an understanding of what it means to be threatened or endangered. Students will meet our Central American Scarlet Macaw, one of the most endangered birds in the wild, and we may also discuss the recovery of the American Bald Eagle.
One of our iguanas may also visit. Here is a prime example of sustainable agriculture. Iguanas are currently farm raised for a variety of purposes. Some animals are released back into the forest. Some animals are sold for the pet industry. Iguana eggs and iguanas are also eaten throughout Mexico, Central, and South America. Unlike cattle, iguanas can be raised with no substantial impact to the surrounding environment.
Other Topics may include:
Sustainable Agriculture
Eco-Tourism
Ways we can help protect our planet Earth
The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
No two programs are exactly alike. This program flows on a structural outline and is guided by the level of student participation
For older students, another possible topic to explore is population growth. This is an excellent post presentation classroom discussion to explore.
At one time, the U.S. had substantial forests. We have cleared land and built cities and golf courses for our own use. Is it right for us to dictate what other countries do with their own land?
